More Than Just the Catch: Lessons from Fishing and Writing

Updated: 4 days ago

I’ve always said there’s more to fishing than catching fish. It’s about the patience, the process, the quiet moments when nothing’s biting, and the lessons you learn just by being on the water.

Turns out, writing a book is the same.

When people find out I’m the author of The Battery Powered Home, they ask me how they should start writing their own book. I tell them:

Just cast your line. Start writing. It won’t be perfect. Some days, the words won’t come. Other days, you’ll hook something big. The key is to show up, cast your ideas, and trust the process. Get everything down on paper first. Don't worry about spelling, flow, order, syntax, or grammar. Just get it on paper- this becomes your vomit draft.

Fishing—and writing—teach you patience, persistence, and how to find your own rhythm. It’s not about the one big fish or the one big book. It’s about the discipline of doing the work, day after day, even when the fish aren't biting.

So, if you want to write a book, get started. Throw that first cast. And remember—there’s more to it than the final product.
